Roosevelt Wilson, age 56, of Chicago and formerly of Mound Bayou, Mississippi, transitioned into eternal life Friday, May 15, 2020. Longtime devoted friend of Adrien. Loving brother of Dorothy. Cherished uncle of Michelle (Al) and David (Melissa). Preceded in death by his parents John and Letha Mae Wilson. Roosevelt was dedicated to his volunteer work as a drug and alcohol counselor at nursing homes. He will be remembered for his infectious laughter, jovial disposition and his kindness and consideration for others. The following eulogy was written by his niece Michelle:
"What can I say about my Uncle Roosevelt? I'm speechless at the thought of him not being here with us anymore. His death due to complications with Covid-19 took him from us all too soon. It is a bit overwhelming. I didn't have time to really grieve my Granny passing three months ago, now her son (my uncle). We always think we have more time.
What can I say about my Uncle Roosevelt? To know him is to love him wholeheartedly. He was the life of the party. Just full of life. Jovial. Rambunctious laugh. Kind spirit. People who knew Roosevelt had nothing but nice things to say about him. He lived in a group home for the last 10 years of his life with a group of people who just absolutely adored him. He truly blossomed there and I know his spirit and energy will be sorely missed by all who live there. Uncle Roosevelt cared alot about family. Although he never wed or had children of his own, my brother and I were like his kids. I guess you can say he was my big brother before my own little brother came along. He was truly a big kid at heart. Always playing jokes on people. He was protective but gentle. Never harsh or mean-spirited. Everybody loved him so much. He made friends easily. When we would take road trips to Mississippi, he would give us a tour of the whole city and introduce us to all the people he knew. You would think he was famous! Everyone knew Roosevelt. He endured so much in his lifetime but he never let it keep him down. He kept pushing forward, living life the best way he knew how. I take comfort in knowing he had a relationship with God. I know he gained his wings and is in heaven reunited with my Granny and Papa. He loved us all dearly. He said it often when he would call to check-in. I know he loved his big sister (my mom Dorothy Harbin) who he affectionately called Ann. He'd tell me hey listen Michelle, you are sounding more and more like my sister. I thought it was her on the phone. I'd laugh at him but I knew he meant it in an endearing way. He loved talking about movies with me and my hubby, the movie buff extraordinaire. He told me once that he really liked Al for me and for Al to take care of me (his niece). I'll cherish that forever.
What can I say about my Uncle Roosevelt? He was amazing in every way. Flaws and all. He was imperfectly perfect. God blessed us with him for this period of time and I know he left a lasting impression on any and everyone that crossed his path. Uncle, we love you. We miss you. We will see you again one day. Rest in paradise."
