Alfred Louis Smith (aka Al) was born September 3, 1949, to the late Lenard Smith, Sr. and Ruth Mae Barnes-Smith of Muskogee, OK and departed this life peacefully at the Advocate South Suburban Hospital in Hazel Crest, IL on September 29, 2023, at the age of 74.

Born the second child of Christian parents, Al at an early age, was baptized and became a member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Muskogee, OK. He graduated from Manual Training High School in 1967, and soon after was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served in Germany as a military crew member who operated and drove tanks.

Upon Al’s return to the United States, he resided in Chicago, IL, where he met and married Yvonne Speedy-Smith, and to that union they parented two wonderful daughters. Al worked on various jobs – Smith’s Drywall Co., U.S. Steel Co., Montgomery Wards, and as a Security Guard for the Holy Cross Hospital. He taught art at Kennedy King College in Chicago, IL. His last job before retiring he worked as a property assessor for the City of Chicago.

Al was preceded in death by his parents, Lenard and Ruth Smith, a brother, Lonnie Smith; sisters, Letha Mae Swift and Rose Mary Reed. He is survived by his wife Yvonne Smith and two daughters, Lucinda Smith-Powell and Yvette Smith-Hill, all of Milwaukee, WI; a brother, Lenard Smith, Jr., Bloomington, IL and a sister, Maureen Smith-Ishodi, San Francisco, CA; a brother-in-law, Rev. Jeremiah Swift, Muskogee, OK, a sister-in-law, Laverne Este, Chicago, IL; a host of grand and great grandchildren, nephews, nieces, cousins, neighbors and friends.

Al met no strangers; his sharing disposition will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

A Celebration of Life will be held on a later date.
