Andrew “Andy” L Talo Jr., age 70, passed away on February 22, 2026, after a courageous battle with a UTI, complicated by sepsis and aspirating pneumonia, while fighting Stage 4 breast cancer. From the very start, Andy faced intellectual and physical challenges, yet he approached life with a quiet strength and a joyful heart that remained undeterred even in his final days.

Andy was a valued resident of the GlenKirk Home in Mundelein, Illinois, where he became a beloved member of the “Acorn family.” He was known for his active participation in daily programs and relished the social outings provided by GlenKirk. Despite the difficulties posed by his health issues, Andy was unwaveringly active and mobile—a true champion who confronted every medical hurdle with grace, whether it was a blood draw or a visit to Dr. Kanter’s office, always without a complaint.

His happiest moments were spent with his niece, Debbie, and her granddaughter, DeAnna, both of whom he cherished deeply. A perfect day for Andy involved simple pleasures such as a trip to Goodwill, savoring a Big Mac or a Whopper, and enjoying either a cold Coke or a hot cup of coffee.

Andy was a collector of joy, finding wonder in the world around him. Whether he was visiting the Volo Auto Museum, exploring the Renaissance Faire, or watching The Andy Griffith Show, he radiated enthusiasm. His true passions were simple yet unique; he adored hats, beads, sunglasses, and, perhaps most notably, pens. If you ever mislaid a pen, you would likely find it tucked away safely by Andy, who kept them as prized souvenirs.

His endearing nature sometimes made him a target for those who did not understand him. Nonetheless, he was surrounded by a community that genuinely appreciated and valued his gentle spirit. His family extends their deepest gratitude to several remarkable groups and individuals who contributed to Andy’s quality of life and well-being.

Special thanks go to GlenKirk for years of dedicated care and for providing Andy with countless opportunities. They also appreciate Dr. Kanter and his staff at Northwest Oncology & Hematology for their expert care and the endless supply of protein shakes, as well as JourneyCare in Barrington, particularly his nurse, Wendy, for her compassion during his final journey. They also thank Chicagoland Cremation Options for their compassion and support during this difficult time. Additionally, the family wishes to acknowledge those individuals who took the time to engage with Andy, sharing moments of joy playing Jenga and bags, gifting him his favorite Andy Griffith t-shirt and hat, and ensuring he had his favorite Oreo cookies for his final transition.

Andrew Talo Jr. was a simple man who imparted valuable lessons of resilience to everyone around him; he showed the importance of a well-timed joke, a well-stolen pen, and even a Roku remote. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing his gentle spirit.

Andrew was preceded in death by his parents, Anna Mae Talo and Andrew L Talo Sr.; his sister, Charlotte Bandemer; his brother-in-laws, Gerald Bandemer Sr. and Francisco Morales Jr.; and his nephews, Jeffrey Kingsley and Daniel W Hartwig, along with his great-great niece, Laurana Talo.

He leaves behind his loving family, including his twin brother Kenneth (Donna) Talo; his sisters, Marilyn (Don) Kingsley and Suzanne (Ron) Gonzalez; his devoted niece, Deborah Hartwig; great-great niece, DeAnna Hartwig; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Andy also leaves behind his cherished GlenKirk “Acorn family,” including John Tunzi, Joe Duvall, Paul Becker, and Jon Hammel, as well as dedicated caregivers Davis, Tobi, Tee, Bria, Stacey, Keisha Joe, and Juile.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
