Anges O. Curtin

Sep 25, 1934 — Jul 1, 2026

Agnes Curtin, nee O'Malley, on Wednesday July 1st died peacefully in her sleep as the result of congestive heart failure. She was 91. Born and raised in Lincoln Park's diverse St. Vincent DePaul parish to immigrant parents, she was remarkable in her integrity, modesty, humility, and stoicism. Even in her frustration with her aging and decline, she knew how blessed she was: by friends, from Immaculata High School and Mundelein College to Evanston and Three Crowns Park; by her beloved grandchildren, Hannah and Gavin Wahlgren; by her surviving children and their spouses, Mary Pat Wahlgren (Dave) and Paul (Christina); by the love of her life, Gerard, who predeceased her in 2006; and by her oldest son, John, who died in 2012. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews too hilarious and numerous to count.
Her Catholicism shaped not only her beliefs but her character: she loved family, the liturgy, and traditional Irish music, and had no patience for showoffs, bullies, or bigots. She and Jerry were pillars of Evanston's St. Nicholas parish for over 40 years, where they served as ushers, offerants, and CHIRP members.

While she long ago gave up her manhattans and Virginia Slims, she loved good company, good conversation, good music, and laughter, all of which she was able to enjoy until her very last day.

Memorial services will be held on Friday, July 24th at St. Nicholas Church, 806 Ridge Avenue, in Evanston. Visitation from 10:00 - 11:30 with a funeral mass to follow at 11:30.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to St. Vincent DePaul or to Catholic Charities.
