Ann Drake Bowen

February 15, 1920 — January 31, 2022

ANN DRAKE BOWEN died January 31, 2022.  She was born in Logan, Ohio February 15, 1920, daughter of the late Mame Campbell and Francis Meade Bowen. From an early age,  Ann’s life was music.  There were two Steinway grand pianos in her grandmother’s house that her mother, sisters and her grandmother played.  After graduating from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music she taught piano and music theory at the Ogontz School for Girls in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania.  She received her MA from Columbia University and her doctorate from Northwestern. She also studied piano and theory here and abroad with a host of impressive artists.  She joined the faculty of Lake Forest College in 1952 chairing the department from 1977 to 1983. On her 80th birthday she performed a piano recital at the The Lily Reid Holt Memorial Chapel to great acclaim.   Ann cherished her many friends and colleagues in Lake Forest and was a superb hostess well in to her nineties.  She will be missed by her three nieces, a nephew and most especially by a great grand nephew, Bill Briggs, who lovingly cared for her these last two years enabling her to stay in her own home which she loved.

The family will hold a memorial service in her honor in Logan, OH this spring.  A service will be held for her friends in Lake Forest in the coming weeks.
