Betty Lou Smith, 97, passed away on July 2, 2025 in Glenview, IL. Loving wife for 60 years of the late Frank S. Smith; beloved mother of Sue (Tony) Peterson, Jan (Jim) Romey and Carolyn (Dave) Tatge; adored grandmother of Julia Lewis, Elizabeth Williams, Jenny Otto, Katie Johnsmeyer, and Kelsey Peterson. Betty was blessed with 4 great-grandchildren.
Betty grew up in Wilmette, Illinois and graduated from New Trier High School. She attended the Academy of Fine Arts In Chicago and the Art Institute of Chicago. She was a highly accomplished watercolor artist, having sold more than 500 paintings by commission, at exhibits, and in art galleries in Illinois, Wisconsin, and Arizona.
Betty was active in the Wilmette Woman’s Club, a past president of the Junior Woman’s Club of Wilmette and of her PEO Chapter GC. She was an avid golfer and bridge player. Betty was an amazing cook and greatly enjoyed hosting parties for her many friends. Betty loved traveling, and she and Frank traveled extensively throughout their lives together.
Betty was a life-long faithful member of Trinity United Methodist Church of Wilmette, having been baptized at home because the church was under construction in 1928. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 19th at 10:00 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1024 Lake Avenue, Wilmette, IL. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church of Wilmette or the charity of choice. The family wishes to thank Arbor Terrace of Glenview and Guardian Hospice for the loving and compassionate care they provided Betty.
