“Racing is life. Anything before or after is just waiting.” - Steve McQueen
Billy Wayne Luckey, also known as “Bill,” age 90, a beloved father, grandfather, and friend to many, passed away on May 2, 2026, in Hines,
Illinois, surrounded by family. Born on October 17, 1935, in Oakfield, Tennessee, Bill’s life was proof that doing what you love means you never work a day in your life.
Bill grew up in rural Western Tennessee. He was heavily involved in Boy Scouts of America and loved the outdoors. He served in the U.S.
Army from 1955 to 1958 and then relocated to Chicago. He entered the drag racing scene in the 1960s and made a name for himself with his
1955 Chevy, Mr. Luckey. He left a lasting impact and legacy on the drag racing scene in the Chicagoland area as a chassis builder and race car fabricator with Bill Luckey Race Cars. Bill was proud to earn a “Best Engineered” award from the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) in 1988 and to be inducted into the Great Lakes Dragaway Hall of Fame in 2009. Bill loved working on cars and was working on his final creation, a 1950 custom Ford, up until his passing. His passion for race cars made him the go-to guy for all things engineering and design. He loved good-quality Southern BBQ, sweet tea, and banana pudding.
He is survived by, and was tremendously proud of, his seven grandchildren: Katelyn (Matt), Lauren, Cole, Avie Lou, Andy, Madison and Evelyn; and his children, Steve (Katie), Mike (Amy), and April. Bill’s memory will live on through his family, whose lives were enriched by his unwavering love and support. He gave more than he received throughout his life. May he rest peacefully in the loving arms of God.
A memorial service to celebrate Bill’s life will be held privately at a later date.
