Daniel Benjamin Quijano
June 13, 1983 – September 21, 2026
Daniel Benjamin Quijano, 43, of Beach Park, Illinois, passed away on September 21, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime of love that will continue long beyond his passing.
Daniel was not a man who pretended to be perfect. He knew the mistakes he had made, owned them, learned from them, and continued striving to become a better man. That honesty was one of the things that made him so special. He faced life as it was—not through rose-colored glasses—and learned how to make the best of difficult circumstances. He was strong, self-reliant, resilient, and courageous.
He could hold a grudge with the best of them, but he could also love with his entire heart.
Daniel loved deeply and loyally. Blood was never the requirement for being family to him. If you chose Daniel, Daniel chose you. And when he loved you, he loved you genuinely, completely, and fiercely.
He was fiercely protective of his wife, Bettina Quijano, the woman in whom he found his soulmate and with whom he shared the kind of love so many people spend their lives hoping to find. Through the good, the difficult, and everything in between, Daniel and Bettina faced life together with unwavering commitment.
During Daniel’s illness, Bettina never stopped fighting beside him. She worked tirelessly to keep their life afloat and still rushed to the hospital after work to care for him—changing his gown and sheets, checking him over, making sure he was comfortable, asking questions, advocating for him, and making sure his needs were heard. She loved him through it all, and Daniel knew he was loved.
Daniel was incredibly proud of his children: Michael, Jordan, Xavier, Cameron, Anaya, Rebeka, Dmitri (Rene), Vincent, and Fernando. Life did not always allow him to be as present as he wished he had been, and he was honest about that. But his love for his children never wavered. He carried tremendous pride in each of them and loved them all with his whole heart.
He was also a proud grandfather to Adriel, Julissa, Isabel, Cecilla, Illias, Lola, Jovan, and Asher.
Family was at the center of Daniel’s heart.
He leaves behind his mother, Elizabeth Roman; his father, Manuel Merced; and his siblings, Rocelia, Dawn, George Jr., Gina, Rosie, Mion, Yasmi, and Greg. He was preceded in death by his father, George Quijano.
To his brothers and sisters, Daniel was so much more than a sibling. He was a best friend, a safe place, and someone who loved without judgment. He accepted the people he loved exactly as they were. He did not keep score. He did not hold their lowest moments against them. When they needed him, Daniel showed up.
His loyalty to his brothers and sisters was fierce. They were not simply people he shared a family with; they were pieces of him, and he loved them with an intensity that could always be felt.
Even during his final illness, when Daniel was uncomfortable, exhausted, and fighting for his own life, he continued making room for the people he loved. He still wanted to know how they were doing. He asked about their pain. He checked on the things happening in their lives. Somehow, even while carrying more than anyone should have to carry, Daniel was still thinking about everyone else.
That was Daniel.
There was always room in his heart for the people he loved.
For his siblings, losing Daniel means losing someone whose place can never simply be filled. There will never be another brother who occupies the space he did, and no one will ever fill his shoes. They could not have asked for a better brother, and being loved by him was one of the great gifts of their lives.
Those who knew Daniel will also remember a man who could speak with incredible eloquence and emotional clarity. He had a way of putting feelings into words and seeing situations for what they really were. He was not afraid to look inward, admit where he had fallen short, and keep growing.
He was also wonderfully, unmistakably funny.
Daniel had an incredible memory and could seemingly pull a line from a movie, television show, or comedy routine out of nowhere at exactly the right moment. His sense of humor was one of the gifts he gave the people around him, and the sound of his laughter—and the laughter he caused in everyone else—will be deeply missed.
He loved to cook.
He loved music.
He loved singing and rapping along to his favorite songs and dancing like he was the biggest superstar in the room. Those who loved him will forever be able to picture him doing exactly that.
Daniel was not overly attached to possessions. What he had mattered far less to him than the people he loved. If he had something he could give to help someone, he would. Beneath the toughness was an enormously generous heart.
And in the final chapter of his life, Daniel showed his family once again exactly who he was.
He walked through his last battle with extraordinary strength, courage, and conviction. Even while facing circumstances that would have broken many people, Daniel remained Daniel—loving, thinking of others, making people laugh, and facing what was happening with a remarkable clarity about himself and his life.
His family could not be prouder of the man he became, the growth he fought for, and the strength with which he faced the end of his life.
We are so proud of you, Daniel.
Proud of your courage.
Proud of your growth.
Proud of the way you loved.
Proud of the way you kept showing up.
Proud that you never stopped trying to become better, even when the people who loved you already saw so much worth in the man standing before them.
There will never be another Daniel.
We will miss his voice.
We will miss his humor.
We will miss hearing him quote an entire scene from memory.
We will miss his cooking.
We will miss his singing and rapping.
We will miss his dancing.
We will even miss the grudges.
We will miss his stubbornness, his honesty, his loyalty, and the enormous way he loved people.
We will miss knowing that there was someone in this world who would accept us exactly as we were, without judgment, and love us anyway.
And most of all, we will simply miss him.
Daniel Benjamin Quijano was deeply, fiercely, and completely loved.
And he will be missed beyond anything words can adequately express.
His family will carry him with them—in their stories, their laughter, their music, their kitchens, the things he taught them, and in the love he gave so freely—for the rest of their lives.
