David Smith

David Smith, 71, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home in Chicago on March 19, 2025.

David leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication, survived by his loving children Valdavia (Mr. Stacey) Ellis, Valishia (Ric) Johnson, David (Miranda) Smith, Davida (Antwon) McGruder, Maya (Luke) Klein, Osaze Pettaway-Smith and preceded in death by his cherished daughter Centrell Barnett. His memory will live on through his grandchildren: London (Terrell) Gholston, Mark Ketchem, Shane Ellis, Arika Johnson, Ric Johnson, Alisia Johnson, David Smith, Ryan Smith, Amaree Smith, Phoenix McGruder, Brazil McGruder, and Zealand McGruder, along with his great-grandchildren Brooklyn, Avery, and Terrell Gholston Jr.

David is lovingly remembered by his siblings: Delois Smith-Daniels, Roger Smith, and Lorraine Smith, along with a wide circle of dear friends whose lives he deeply touched.

A visionary entrepreneur and dedicated Industrial Designer, David passionately shared his wisdom and experience as a respected instructor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. His innovative spirit inspired countless students and colleagues alike.

Outside of his professional endeavors, David found great joy in his love for sports cars, fishing trips that brought tranquility, and his profound appreciation of architecture and design, through which he found expression and inspiration.

David Smith’s vibrant legacy, unwavering strength, and enduring love will forever be treasured by all who knew him.
