David Torres Cruz, lovingly known as David Torres to his family and friends, age 78, of Chicago’s Portage Park and Uptown area, born and raised in Las Piedras, Puerto Rico, peacefully passed away on August 14, surrounded by family and loved ones.

He was a loving father, devoted family man, and someone who was always willing to help the people he loved. He was an early riser and believed in working hard, being financially responsible, and taking care of his family. These were lessons he passed on to his children and values that will continue through the generations.

He loved spending time outdoors, especially fishing, and some of his favorite times were spent around the grill with family. He was a passionate Chicago Cubs fan and an avid boxing fan. His love of fishing, baseball and boxing created countless conversations and memories that his family will treasure.

As a father, he taught his children the importance of hard work, responsibility, perseverance, and being there for the people you love. He faced life’s challenges with strength, including overcoming prostate cancer.

Some of the most treasured memories of him are the simple ones: fishing together, talking about baseball and boxing, working in the garden, and the many times he showed up early to lend a helping hand.

He leaves behind many stories and memories that his family will carry with them for the rest of their lives.

He was a Retired machinist at Finkl & Sons.

He is also survived by his siblings William, Noemi, Iris, and Luz.

He was preceded in death by his siblings Eustaquio Jr., Efrain, Elias, and Raul.

In his final days, his family reminded him of how deeply he was loved and how much his life meant to them. His son expressed his gratitude by telling him, “Thank you for making me the man I am. You did a good job. You did the best you could.”

His love of fishing, baseball and boxing created countless conversations and memories that his family will treasure.

His family takes comfort in their faith in Jesus Christ and the hope of resurrection and eternal life. Though he will be deeply missed, his memory will live on in the family he loved, the lessons he taught, and the lives he touched.

Rest in peace, Dad. You will always be loved, always be remembered, and never be forgotten.

A celebration of his life will be determined at a later date and time.
