Geraldine (Gilbert) Richards

June 19, 1928 – November 4, 2026

Geraldine Richards was known by all who loved her as Geri. Geri passed away on November 4, 2026, at the age of 98. Across nearly a century, she built a life rooted in family, lasting friendships, and the community of Blue Island, Illinois.

Geri was born on June 19, 1928, in Peoria, Illinois, to George and Gertrude Reath. Her family lived in Pekin before moving to Blue Island, where her father worked for the Rock Island Railroad. Growing up during the Great Depression, she experienced the hardships of that generation and found joy in friendships and summers spent swimming at Memorial Park Pool. She loved swimming and walking throughout her life. Among her Blue Island friends was John T. C. Gilbert, who worked at the Lyric movie theater and helped Geri and her friends get in to see movies. Their friendship grew into love, and they married in 1948. Together, the established their home in Blue Island and raised four children: Jacqueline, George, John, and Joel. Geri and John shared 44 years of marriage before his death in July 1992.

Geri remained connected to her school friends and regularly attended class reunions. At one of those reunions, she reconnected with Ralph Richards. Both had lost their spouses, and they found companionship and love together. They married in 1996 and enjoyed traveling, dining out, and tending their yard, which earned a Blue Island beautification award. They shared 21 years of marriage before Ralph’s death in 2017. Geri hoped to reach 100 and came remarkably close. Her 98 years held two marriages, four children, generations of grandchildren, and friendships that endured for decades. Her memory lives on in the stories, conversations, and everyday moments shared with those who knew her.

Geri was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, John T. C. Gilbert and Ralph Richards; and her daughter, Jacqueline “Jackie,” who passed awayin the summer of 2007. She is survived by her sons, George, John, and Joel; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Her family is grateful to the staff at Porter Place for the kindness, dignity, and affection they showed her. In keeping with Geri’s wishes, she will be cremated, and no traditional funeral will be held. A celebration of her life is planned for spring 2027, with details to follow. Family and friends are encouraged to bring their stories, photographs, and favorite memories as we gather to remember her.

We take comfort in imagining her reunited with those she loved, dancing in heaven on legs that will never tire. Rest easy, Mom. We love you.
