James Thomas "Jim" Murray

James Thomas “Jim” Murray, of Algonquin, Illinois, passed away peacefully on September 27, 2026, at the age of 86.

Jim was a first-generation Scottish American. His parents came to the United States from Arbroath and Glasgow, Scotland. He grew up on the northwest side of Chicago, where he lived until 1990. He served in the U.S. Army for several years retiring in 1969. In 1960, he went to work for Peoples Gas Company. He retired as a District Superintendent in 1996. After 36 years of service, he trained many and befriended even more. Retirement did little to slow him down. Jim could fix or create anything, from cars to carpetry, he was always ready to lend a hand.

Jim lived in Algonquin from 1990 to 2004 before moving to Arizona with his wife, Dee. There, neighbors came to know him as “Red Truck Jim.” He often drove through the neighborhood, stopping to chat or help someone with a project.

Those who knew Jim will remember his jokes, his stories, his incredible work ethic, and his big heart, especially for animals.In 2018, Jim returned to Algonquin, where his son cared for him until his passing.

Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Dolores “Dee” Duhr Murray, whom he married in 1983; his parents, Agnes Crosbie Murray and James Thom Murray; and his sister, Constance “Connie” Mae Campbell.

He is survived by his sons, Michael Murray and Patrick B. Murray (Kristen Serene); his daughter, Barb Johnson Spitzock (Jeremy Guilbeau); his grandchildren, Jacquelyn (TJ) Zornow, Julia Rottman, and Lucas Spitzock; his great-grandchildren, Bryson and Emilia Zornow and Braxton Hines; his niece, Pam (Peter) Swarzenski; and his nephew, Craig (Kathy) Campbell. Cherished extended family of Brian (Elena) Spitzock and Doreen (Tim) Rottman and loyal friend to many.

A memorial and celebration of Jim’s life will be forthcoming. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to the American Kidney Fund in his memory.
