Janet Welman

October 20, 1949 — April 10, 2026

With heavy hearts and cherished memories, we announce the passing of Janet Welman (née Long) on April 10, 2026. Born in the vibrant city of Chicago, Illinois, on October 20, 1949, Janet was the beloved daughter of Francis and Josephine Long. Her enduring spirit and compassionate nature touched the lives of everyone she met, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and resilience.

Janet’s early years were enriched by her education at St. Francis De Sales High School, followed by her time at Calumet College. Equipped with a keen intellect and a nurturing spirit, she dedicated over 40 years of her life to her career as an executive assistant at Trinity Hospital. Her unwavering dedication and work ethic earned her not only respect but also lifelong friendships that she treasured deeply.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Janet’s life was a vibrant tapestry of interests and passions. She found immense joy in attending library programs and lectures, always eager to learn and grow. Crafting with her grandchildren, working on puzzles, and indulging in diamond paintings filled her days with creativity and joy. Her love for her grandchildren was boundless; she was an ever-present figure at their Boy Scouts meetings, concerts, plays, and cooking competitions, supporting them with an enthusiastic heart. Janet looked forward to her evenings with her granddaughter Gwen where they would cook, watch movies, attend to the house plants and talk.

Janet was a woman who embraced life’s adventures wholeheartedly. Whether she was enjoying the movie theater, seeking the thrill of Las Vegas, or relaxing under the Florida sun, she lived with an infectious zest for life. A tradition close to her heart was visiting Indiana Beach, a cherished memory she kept alive from going with her parents. The boardwalk was a place of laughter and joy, where she created countless memories with her daughters Deborah and Tina, and her adored grandchildren Gwendolyn, Luca, and Charlie. She enjoyed going on the attractions with her grandkids, eating corn dogs and elephant ears. Janet’s competitive spirit shone brightly as she played games, especially Skee-ball, winning tickets galore to exchange for treasures for her grandchildren.

Music was another of Janet’s passions, and her eclectic taste spanned from the timeless tunes of Elvis Presley to the captivating melodies of Michael Jackson and Josh Groban. The fall season held a special place in her heart, as she admired the vibrant colors of changing leaves. Yet it was Christmas that truly brought out the warmth in Janet’s soul. Her home was a haven of holiday cheer, filled with lovingly chosen decorations and thoughtful gifts. Christmas cookie baking sessions with her granddaughter Gwen were particularly dear to her heart.

Janet’s personality was a beautiful blend of strength and independence, kindness and humor, love and warmth. Her laughter was infectious, her kindness boundless, and her love unconditional.

Janet is survived by her devoted daughters, Deborah (Raymond) and Tina (Lawrence), and her beloved grandchildren, Gwendolyn, Luca, and Charlie. Though she has left this earthly realm, her spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

As we gather to celebrate Janet’s life, let us remember her not with tears, but with the same joy and laughter she brought into our lives. Her memory will be our guiding star, illuminating our paths with the love and kindness she so freely gave to all.
