John Joseph Byron passed away unexpectedly on September 2, 2024, after suffering a brain aneurysm in the early hours of September 1, his birthday. John was a devoted husband to Becky Lynn Byron for 16 years and is survived by his loving family, including his parents, Bob and Debbie Byron; his brother, Peter Byron; and his sister, Kelley Kelly. John was beloved by his many nieces and nephews, and his extended family of brothers- and sisters-in-law, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
John, a Partner at Steptoe in Chicago, was known as an extraordinary attorney who embraced some of the most difficult tasks in complex legal cases. John's innovative approach to legal challenges set him apart, earning him recognition among colleagues and clients alike.
More than just a skilled attorney, John was a cherished member of the firm and a mentor to many young associates. His ability to foster a supportive environment made those who worked alongside him feel like part of a cohesive team, showcasing his character and personality. Even when the work was challenging, John's sense of humor and camaraderie brought laughter and joy to the lives of many.
Outside of his work, John was known for his sense of adventure and quick wit. He was a world traveler, always looking ahead to the next big trip. When at home, John enjoyed spending time with his dog, Bruin, and exploring Chicago. John loved sports, especially the New Orleans Saints, the Boston Bruins, and baseball in all forms. John and his dad had embarked on a quest to visit all of the MLB stadiums in the country; John had one stadium left to complete his tour.
John was also a force of good in his community. He was an active fundraiser for the National MS Society, participating in the Texas MS 150 ride for several years, and recently running the Chicago Marathon with the MS team.
As we remember John, we honor his contributions to the field of law, his dedication to his family and friends, and the warmth he brought to all who knew him. A funeral service in his memory will take place on September 13, 2024, at 1:00pm at Saint Clement Catholic Church, located at 642 W. Deming Place, Chicago, IL 60614.
