Jeffrey Clark Winterstein, age 61, went to be with Jesus during the fourth watch of the night on September 23, 2026. He is survived by his parents, Ronald and Cheryl; his brother, Kevin; and a multitude of loving extended family members and friends.
Jeff was born in Park Ridge, Illinois, to Ronald Joseph Winterstein and Cheryl Genevieve (Swenson) Winterstein. His family moved several times throughout his childhood, but he often spoke fondly of living close to family in Rolling Meadows, Illinois, and of his years in Burlington, North Carolina.
Jeff possessed many talents and interests. A lifelong musician, he played the clarinet in concert, stage, and marching bands, and proudly served as drum major. His greatest musical gift was the piano. Jeff played with exceptional skill throughout high school, college, church groups, and community events. He also enjoyed participating in and touring with various choirs.
Curious and intellectually adventurous, Jeff explored several languages, including American Sign Language (ASL) and Spanish, and even attempted Cantonese, German, and Swedish. He was also known for his extensive knowledge of cars—able to explain shared frame types across manufacturers and countless other details to anyone willing to listen.
Jeff pursued higher education with dedication. He graduated from Bethel College in Saint Paul, Minnesota, with a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work, and later recognized a calling to information and community service. He earned his Master’s Degree in Library Science from Dominican University in Illinois.
Jeff was a man of deep principle, sharp intelligence, and quiet strength. With those qualities, he devoted 28 years to the Elk Grove Village Public Library in Illinois, serving in various capacities. His love for community and knowledge touched countless lives. He delighted in ordering new titles patrons would enjoy, answering obscure questions, and sharing his expertise. Over nearly three decades, Jeff formed meaningful bonds with staff and patrons. His colleagues encouraged and supported him daily throughout his battle with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), and several remained steadfast friends—visiting him faithfully during his time in hospice.
Known for his kind heart, quick wit, and unwavering stubbornness—a trait that allowed him to live independently for many years with progressive MS—Jeff was a private man who walked through life with a gentle spirit.
During his years in Illinois, Jeff actively attended Willow Creek Community Church. He loved serving on the parking team and volunteering at the Global Leadership Summit each
year. He participated in the singles ministry and formed lasting friendships through small groups and men’s study groups. Even when MS later limited his ability to attend services, these friends remained a steady and cherished presence in his life. Jeff was deeply faithful to his Lord, and his commitment to Christ shaped the way he treated everyone around him. Throughout his adult life, he was a loyal, irreplaceable friend whose absence will be profoundly felt.
