Magdalena Marchan, age 73, of Chicago’s Avondale neighborhood, passed away on June 20, 2026, surrounded by the love and memories of the family she built over a lifetime.
Born on October 19, 1952, in Guerrero, Mexico, Magdalena made Chicago her home for more than 40 years. Through those years, she created a life centered on family, laughter, traditions, and the simple joys that became unforgettable to those who knew her.
She shared 57 years of marriage with her beloved husband, Amado Marchan, building a life and family together filled with love and devotion.
Magdalena was a loving mother to Maribel Lagunas (Juan Salgado); Amado Marchan, Jr.; and Vanessa Marchan (Angel Martinez).
She was an adored grandmother to Talisha, Aliana, and Kristian Solis, and Jonathan, Jackie, and Hiliana Martinez, who brought her endless pride and happiness.
She was also an adored Great Grandmother to Sophia Sanchez, who brought her endless happiness.
She is also survived by her siblings, Alberta Diaz and Victor Diaz, along with countless nieces and nephews who will remember her with love.
Magdalena was known for being sassy, funny, caring, and honest to a fault. She said what she meant, made people laugh, and loved deeply. She had a special love for her television shows—so much so that phone calls could suddenly end and visits might be cut short if one of her programs was about to start. It became one of the many things her family affectionately smiled about. She was very unique and loved in her own special way .
She loved music of every kind and never went anywhere without a crossword puzzle book tucked into her purse or pocket. She enjoyed keeping her mind busy and was always ready for the next puzzle. Magdalena was also known for her collection of hats—a signature part of who she was and one of the first things people thought of when they thought of her.
Her presence, humor, honesty, and unmistakable personality leave behind memories that will continue to bring comfort and smiles to those who loved her.
