Martha Mead

January 25, 1929 — September 17, 2019

Martha H. Mead, 90, of Carol Stream and formerly of Elmhurst, went home to be with the Lord on September 17, 2019. Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on January 25, 1929, she studied art and later earned her nursing RN degree. Beloved wife of the late Gilbert (2010). Loving mother of Stephen (Marjorie), Robert (Connie), David (Brenda Simms) and Donald (Karen Sarasin). Cherished grandma of Ryan, Erik, Leota, Adam, Jonathan, and Anna. Great grandmother of Tobias and Asher. Dear sister of the late Roger. Much loved friend of many, young and old. She was loved and appreciated by many for her kindness and caring. Her love of the arts permeated her life, and she shared this in many diverse ways. Her beautiful calligraphy cards and notes brightened the birthdays of many, friends and family alike. A skilled seamstress, quilter and needle-pointer, her home was filled with hand-crafted creations. Her grandchildren especially benefited from her love of baking with chocolate frosted brownies, lemon bars, and chocolate chip cookies among some of the favorites. An avid reader, she delighted in stories of all kinds. She greatly enjoyed reading the Bible and participating in Bible studies, though that was only one concrete expression of her bone-deep faith in Jesus Christ. A special joy in her life was attending the many concerts and recitals of her musician husband Gil, and sons David and Don, and, above all, classical radio station WFMT and favorite recordings. A celebration of Martha's life will be held on September 29 at 3 pm at Covenant Living at Windsor Park,120 Windsor Park Drive, Carol Stream, IL 60188. Pastors George Garrison and Alva Steffler from Immanuel Presbyterian Church officiating. Private interment at Wheaton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to Immanuel Presbyterian Church, 29W260 Batavia Rd, Warrenville, IL 60555, Arrangements entrusted to Chicagoland Cremation Options of Schiller Park, Illinois.
