In Loving Memory of Melissa Stein
August 25, 1970 – June 22, 2025
Melissa Stein, age 54, of Schaumburg grew up in Chicago (Albany Park), Illinois, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 22, 2025 surrounded by her loving family, after a courageous battle with colon cancer. Born on August 25, 1970, Melissa was a vibrant, compassionate soul whose presence could light up any room. She was a devoted mother, daughter, sister, and friend who left an indelible mark on the hearts of everyone who knew her.
Melissa is survived by her loving children: Jade Reitz (34), Alora Beck (21), and John Beck (19), who were her greatest pride and joy. She also leaves behind her parents, Deanna Stein (nee Hunter) and Nick Stein; her cherished siblings, Michelle and Nick Stein; her nephew James Stein, Niece Nicole(Jack) Donavan(nee Stein), Great niece Audrey Donavan and countless friends and extended family who considered her a second mother, a confidant, and a constant source of warmth and support.
A gifted hairstylist for over 30 years in the City of Chicago that she called home, Melissa poured her heart into her work and made everyone who sat in her chair feel seen and beautiful. Though she eventually stepped away from the salon to focus on caring for her son Johnny, she never let go of her passion—always happy to do the hair of those closest to her with the same love and skill she brought to every part of her life.
Melissa later became a dedicated leasing agent, bringing her signature charisma, empathy, and drive into a new chapter of her career. No matter the role she took on, Melissa gave her all—with integrity, humor, and grace.
She had a rare gift for finding light in darkness, joy in struggle, and purpose in pain. She turned life’s challenges into lessons, always reminding others to see the silver linings. If you ever saw a butterfly around her, she’d say it was a sign from a friend or a reminder she was on the right path. That belief guided her, and in turn, she guided us.
Melissa’s life was filled with music—whether it was Jelly Roll playing in the kitchen, Queen blasting through the living room, or Duran Duran setting the mood for a dance party, her home was never quiet, and never dull. She had an unmatched ability to celebrate—her own victories and especially the victories of those she loved. She knew just what people needed, especially in their hardest moments, and gave her love freely and fully.
Melissa Stein was more than a mother, daughter, or friend—she was a beacon of love, laughter, and resilience. Her legacy lives on in the strength she instilled in her children, the joy she spread to all who met her, and the music and butterflies she leaves behind as gentle reminders of her beautiful spirit.
She fought with grace and strength until the very end, and though cancer took her body, it never touched her soul. She will be deeply missed and forever loved. If she had the opportunity she would tell you don't put off your colonoscopy, it could save your life! To her children I Love you, go enjoy life and be successful!
A celebration of life will on her birthday in August.
