Michael McGavin

Michael McGavin, of Northlake, IL, formerly of Sugar Grove, passed away suddenly on October 14 at Gottleib Memorial Hospital. Mike and his late wife, Carolyn, enjoyed a loving marriage of 63 years until her passing in November of 2022.

Mike was born to Frank and Bernadette McGavin in Grand Rapids, Michigan on February 10, 1935. He had three brothers, Martin, John, and Tom, all deceased. Also proceeding him in death is his grandson, Piotr McGavin, and his niece, Patricia Burkholder.

Mike was raised in Grand Rapids and met Carolyn at Marquette University, before graduating from University of Wisconsin Law School. They spent their early years in Madison, Wisconsin and the Chicago area before moving to the village of Prestbury, where they raised their children; Michael, Monica Fullbright (Mark), Patrick (Monika), Kevin, Moira (Stephen Thibodeau), and Tim (Laura Cheesbrough). He adored his 9 grandchildren; Matthew, Molly, Maddie, Aleksander, Annie, Emma, Eric, Quinn, and Lia (Jack Scott). Mike is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Celeste Johnson, and his special friend, Peggy Stanitzek, and numerous nieces and nephews who he cherished.

Mike enjoyed a rewarding and successful career as a Director of Labor Relations in Chicago. He also enjoyed gardening, golf and downhill skiing, and loved to cook and bake for his family and friends.

Mike will be cherished as a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. He was a kind and generous soul and will be remembered fondly for his great humor, sweet smile, and gentle demeanor.

He will be profoundly missed but we take great comfort knowing he touched so many lives throughout his life, and we will forever be grateful for his unwavering love and positive example. He showed everyone how to be a better person.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to your charity of choice. Mike’s burial and memorial service will be held in Grand Rapids, Michigan at a later date. A Celebration of Life will be held in the Aurora area, details are pending.
