Robert Steve Kovanda (78) left this life to be with the Lord on November 29, 2021 after battling heart disease.

Beloved and treasured husband of Gail Patricia (nee Hartley). Loving father of Keith (Teresa), Kathryn (Matthew) Szamocki and Kristina (Helica Gonzalez). Cherished Papa of Jonathan, Connor, Joseph, Madelyn and Robert. Fond brother of the late Joseph Kovanda. Brother-in-law to Joseph and the late Sharon Niemiec and the late JoAnne Kovanda. He will be further remembered and dearly missed by nieces, nephews, cousins and many, many dear friends.

Born in Chicago, IL on June 19, 1943 to the late Joseph and Emily (Vanik) Kovanda. After moving to Cicero, IL, he attended Morton High School. Following graduation, he worked as a produce manager for National Tea Company. In 1970, he changed careers to become a carpet installer which was his long-lasting job of nearly 40 years until retiring in 2009.
He resided in Arlington Heights for 48 years where he raised his wonderful children. Loved his fishing trips and especially Wednesday night bocce, Friday night poker, board games, dominoes and card games with family and friends.

Dear Gail, Keith, Kristina, Kathryn, and Family,

As the Director of Alumni Relations Emeritus, I offer you the sympathy and prayers of the Saint Viator High School community, as well as my own.

Our hearts go out to you as you move through your journey of grief during this holiday season, as the music proclaims this is "the most wonderful time of the year." We pray for you as you share the stories, laugh and cry, and find ways to celebrate the life of your husband and father and the love you shared.

As I read the obituary for Robert, a "beloved and treasured husband…loving father…cherished papa…fond brother" who will be "dearly missed," I was reminded of an adaptation of a reading from the Book of Sirach.

"Let us praise an illustrious man,
faithful to his family and friends, strong in his love.
At peace in his heart and his world,
he has left us his good name, and we recount his life of praiseworthy deeds.
A generous man his good works will never be forgotten.
Among his family and friends remains a rich inheritance born of him….
His name lives on from generation to generation.
We gather to sing his praises.
We proclaim his wisdom and love of life all our days."

May you be comforted by the memories of your husband and father and the love you shared!
May the knowledge Robert lives on in your goodness give you peace and hope!

Take care and God bless you with the gifts you most need!

Dear Gail and family, We send our love and sincere condolences on Bob's passing. This wonderful guy will surely be missed. When we think back to our late night card games and all the laughter and fun we had, we automatically think of Bob. God love you both.

Dear Uncle Bob, you and your great demeanor will be greatly missed. It's been awhile since I saw you last, but I can still see that huge smile and hear that infectious laugh. Playing board games will never be the same. One of a kind for sure. Love you Uncle Bobby!
