Russell D.
Swanson
Mar 18, 1952 — Jun 5, 2026
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Russell ("Rusty") Swanson, age 74, of Orland Park, IL (formerly of Chicago, IL) on June 5, 2026. Rusty is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Zoe, his beloved son Zachary and cherished daughter-in-law Cassidy, his beloved son Nicholas, his dear sister Mary Kay (Gene) Cunningham and his dear sister-in-law Corinne (John) Fitzgerald. He was the Beloved Papa to his adoring grandchildren Zoey and Chase Swanson and beloved Uncle to Sarah Swanson (Papa figure to Reid), Sandy Ide, Patty Winkler, Katie Pries, Steve Kaster and Samantha Ritchie. He also leaves behind his very dear friends of many years as well as his beloved neighbors Frances Ward and her brother Richard Ward, to whom he was a cherished father figure and source of guidance for many years. He was preceded in death by his dear sister Karen Kondorf and his brothers John (Maribeth) Swanson and James Swanson.
Russ was a larger-than-life personality and will be remembered for his mellifluous voice and laugh, his sense of humor and his generous heart. He had a passion for music and loved to sing and perform for others. He lived a life defined by courage, strong faith, unwavering loyalty, and a deep sense of compassion. He was a fierce "Protector," both strong yet gentle. Whether it was standing up for his family, defending a friend, or "the underdog," he lived by a code of fairness and kindness. His happiest moments were those spent with his children, grandchildren, and dear friends.
A memorial service/celebration of Rusty’s life will be held at a later date and place to be announced. Please join us in remembering him and honoring his life. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a contribution to Shriners Hospitals for Children or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital — two of Russell's favorite charities.
