Sally-Ann O'Dowd, 89, died peacefully 1st of July 2023 surrounded by her loving family. Resident of Palatine, formerly Hoffman Estates and born in Galesburg, Illinois, to the late Albert and Anne (nee Meyer) LaFollette. Also proceeded in death by her stepmother Perle (nee Davis) LaFollette.
Beloved wife of the late Matthew "Mattie" (1998). Loving mother of Kathleen O'Dowd, Matthew J. Jr. (Betty), Nancy (Paul) LoCascio, Michael (Karen), Sean (Lynn), and Eamon (Maryanne), and the late Kevin Barry. Cherished grandmother "gammie" of Matt, Colleen, Jessica, Michael, Katie, Kelsey-Ann, Kelly, Anne, Kevin, and the late Timothy. Great grandmother of 11. Dear sister of Patricia (the late Chuck) Schackmann, and the late Sue (the late Bill) Warren. Fond aunt, cousin and friend to many.
Sally-Ann had a beautiful smile that was backed up by her gentle words and kind actions. Her supportive love was cherished by family and many dear friends. Unless they crossed her in a game of her beloved canasta. She truly saw life as a glass half full. In her later years, while living directly across from her condo building’s swimming pool, Sally-Ann would often counter neighbors' complaints of noise by saying she loved to hear people laughing and enjoying themselves.
Sally-Ann and Mattie were among the early pioneers of Hoffman Estates, moving to Parcel A in 1956, making it the base for their business, O’Dowd Carpet Ltd., for more than 30 years, and dedicating time to many civic and community activities. They were instrumental in establishing St. Hubert’s Catholic Church and the Hoffman Estates Fire Department. She worked as a nurses’ assistant at St. Hubert’s school and as a hearing test technician for Schaumburg School District 54 in the 1960s and 70s.
