Sarah Lynn Brink-Kemmerling passed away peacefully on June 13, 2026 at age 61, following years of significant health challenges.
Sarah was the daughter of the late John Brink and the late Jo Anne Shriner, and stepdaughter of the late Anne Southard Brink; sister to Susan Brink Hardy and Dave Brink; biological mother to Colleen “Cooper” Brink; aunt to Nora, Aidan, Mary, and Joe Hardy, and Sam and Andi Brink; and family member and friend to many who knew her throughout her life.
Born in Park Ridge, Illinois, Sarah grew up in Oak Park and River Forest and spent her life in the Chicagoland area. She graduated from Oak Park and River Forest High School in 1982, followed by a year at Beloit College. Sarah later worked part-time before longstanding mental health challenges gradually altered the course of her life. Despite this, she formed connections wherever she lived, especially later in life. Nurses, aides, social workers, and other caregivers often remarked on her warmth and curiosity. She remembered names, asked about families, and made those around her feel recognized and appreciated.
Even in her final months, Sarah continued to delight in small pleasures - reminiscing, chatting about an old Western on MeTV, catching up with each caregiver who stopped by. She especially enjoyed her favorite treats, whether something from Dunkin’, New York Bagel & Bialy, the new improved Whopper, or Chinese takeout.
Following a prolonged period of physical decline and multiple hospitalizations in early 2026, Sarah entered hospice care in March. While her prognosis initially appeared very limited, she surprised those around her by recovering enough to spend meaningful time with family and new friends, reconnecting with many of the qualities that made her uniquely herself. That time became an unexpected gift of conversations, laughter, and shared memories that will be treasured.
Sarah is remembered with love by her family and by the many people whose lives she touched through her kindness.
