Sidney Lancaster, a beloved figure in his family and community, passed away peacefully at
home on January 10, 2025, at 79. Born on February 8, 1945, in Chicago, Illinois, Sidney
lived a life characterized by dedication and love for his family and a deep commitment to
his profession and service.
Sidney enjoyed a distinguished career. He began his career at Western Electric and continued
as a long-time employee at Illinois Bell, where he made invaluable contributions during his tenure.
His work ethic and determination earned him the respect of his colleagues and laid the foundation
for a successful professional life.
In addition to his career, Sidney was a proud retired Navy veteran, having served his
country with honor and dedication. His military service was a source of pride for him, and
he carried the values instilled in him during that time throughout his life.
In his youth, he enjoyed photography and skying and was an avid reader; Sidney found
immense joy in discovering new worlds through literature. His passion for reading was
matched only by his love for family, which remained at the center of his life. Sidney’s
enduring legacy is reflected in the lives of his children, grandchildren, and extended
family, who will cherish the values and lessons he imparted.
Sidney was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred Wright and Rosa Lancaster; his
siblings, Rosa Lancaster, June Wright, Alfred Wright Jr., Daniel Wright, Clarence Wright,
Joseph Wright, and Milton Wright; his devoted spouse, Sharon Lancaster; and his
daughter Arnita Owoyemi.
He is survived by his daughters, Jean Barker and Kathleen (Hope) Tillman, and his sons,
Craig Lancaster and Lynn Lancaster. He is also mourned by his siblings and relatives,
Ronald Lancaster and Marie Wright, who will remember him fondly. The last years of his
life were enriched by the company of his partner and dear friend, Lou-Evelyn Haynes,
affectionately known as “Ms. E” to his family, with whom his memory will also be
cherished.
Additionally, he leaves behind his beloved grandchildren, including Mawiah Barlow-
Williams, Shabaka Barlow-Williams, Juliann Barker-Bernardi, Jillian Barker-Langford,
Tyler Lancaster, Bryce Lancaster, Gabriel Tillman, Daniel Tillman, Adriel Lopez, and
Anjelica Tillman. In addition to his surviving siblings, children, and grandchildren, he
leaves a host of great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, cousins, in-laws, and friends to
whom his memory is a blessing.
Sidney Lancaster’s life was one of commitment, love, and lasting impact. He will be deeply
missed by all who knew him and loved him.
