Tobi Ward, born on January 29, 1974, in Chicago, IL, passed away on June 23, 2025. Tobi was the beloved brother of Christopher B. Ward and sister to Daniella McDonald. He was the cherished son of Henry and Barbara Ward, both of whom preceded him in death.
Tobi’s life was defined by a deep and lifelong love for music. He began singing in the Advanced Chorus at South Shore High School under the direction of Richard Nunley. He later studied privately with Dr. Edna Williams and pursued coursework at Roosevelt University’s Chicago College of Performing Arts, where he continued his vocal studies with Dr. Roger Scanlan. Tobi’s remarkable voice and dedication to his craft led to numerous chorus and solo appearances, including performances with the Chatham Chorale Ensemble, Bunton Sanctuary Choir (University Church), Senior Choir (Chatham Fields Lutheran), and Chancel Choir (Maryland Presbyterian) under the direction of Charles Thomas Hayes.
A true lover of the arts, Tobi’s passion for opera was a defining part of his life. He cherished attending performances and discussing the beauty and power of the operatic voice. Equally, Tobi carried a deep love for Chicago’s house music scene. He was a devoted fan of Ron Carroll and the soulful energy of house music, often attending park festivals and especially looking forward each year to “The Chosen Few” gatherings that celebrated the city’s legendary music culture.
Tobi is also lovingly remembered by his devoted Aunt Linda Walls, as well as his treasured nieces, Brooklyn and Ava Ward, who brought him immense pride and joy. His warmth, humor, and musical spirit touched countless lives and will continue to resonate with all who knew and loved him.
